Election Fatigue
It is happening again here. There is another election coming up in our area. And after that, if one particular candidate gets elected, there will be yet another election shortly after to replace him. I am so done with elections. Even though I'm a political junkie, I have my limits. Let me break it down for you. It all started with Presidential Primary way back in February of 2008. Seems like a very short time ago, but in election years it was plenty long ago.
So we start there:
Feb 2008 - Presidential Primary
June 2008 - Congressional Primary
November 2008 - Presidential Election
Feb 2009 - Special Election to replace the Board of Supervisors (BOS) Chairman who won a Congressional seat back in June.
March 2009 - Special Election to replace the Supervisor who won the BOS Chairman position back in February.
And then, next month, or perhaps the month after, another election to replace one particular candidate (if he wins the BOS spot) on the School Board. (And this list does't even include the little towns that have had elections in our county since Feb '08 - I didn't vote in any of those so I didn't count them here, but some folks did, so their fatigue HAS to be worse than mine.)
So for the past year I've not only been voting, but also enduring the calls, the mailings, the signs, and the campaigning. I'm just about done with it all. Seems that around here folks are pretty pumped up about their elections, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels the drag of this past year. The longest we went without having to hit the polls was about 5 months, and of course there was all kinds of campaigning in between. Not sure if the election schedule has ever been quite this crowded before, but not since I started voting have I voted so much in one year. I hope that next year and the year after that we don't have quite so many elections (which we shouldn't), and that the fatigue wears off and I once again have that sparkle in my eye when an election is mentioned.
