First Day Jitters
My son, JavaBoy, has been so excited about Kindergarten for so long that I have avoided reading any "first day of Kindergarten" books to him because I didn't want even the slightest idea that he should be worried or concerned about his first day to enter his mind. At the most random moments he will pipe up to me, "Mommy, I'm going to meet new friends when I start Kindergarten!" or "Mommy, when I start Kindergarten, you can't come with me -- you are going to have to drop me off, it's not like preschool!" He is ready with a capital R -- even marking the days on his personal wall calendar.
I'm so proud of his confidence and joie de vivre -- both of which he seems to have in endless supply. And yet, a conversation we had on Monday caught me off guard.
"But who will I sit next to when it is time to eat?"
"Well, just sit down, and someone will sit down next to you!"
"And what will I say to them? I don't know any of them."
"Just tell them your name and ask a question."
"Maybe I shouldn't go..."
"It will be fun!"
"Yeah, you are right, it will be," and with that, I finished applying my lipstick, thanked my son for the pep talk and his sage advice, and headed off to my first DC Metro Moms Blog event at Good Stuff Eatery with Chef Spike. And you know what -- he was right -- just like Kindergarten, at Mommy events, you just show up, sit down, and start talking and soon you will make new friends.
How did my young son become so wise?
