There's more than one way to feed the hungry
I can be a self-righteous jerk sometimes -- one of those people who
plants herself at the center of the universe where she can sit in
judgment of all who orbit around her. Suffice to say, it's not a
quality I'm particularly proud of. Over the years, I've learned to keep
my ugly side under wraps. But every once in a while, it busts out and
surprises me.
That happened a couple of days ago when I was working at a soup kitchen with some friends from church.
We serve and clean up after about 100 people -- so it's a big job -- but one I normally enjoy. Not that day. We had a small crew on hand, and for some reason, I got it in my head that I was the ONLY person who was actually working.
There I was, Cinderella herself ... opening can after can after can of green beans ... while a sullen teenager slouched in the corner, applying lip gloss and sending text messages.
