Father's Day: A satire
Father's Day is here! It's that time of year once again to celebrate our fathers, grandpas, uncles, and all male relatives under the collective Hallmark celebration that we sweetly refer to as Father's Day. When my husband recently asked that we make him breakfast, give him time to watch sports and then prepare his favorite dinner I replied, "We did that today, dear. EVERY DAY is Father's Day". And I think a lot of women might agree that it often seems that every day is father's day.
A day when dad gets to sit around, be regaled and honored, cooked for, cleaned after and allowed to have his say is pretty much every day, at least in our house. Let's look at the evidence: aside from having to go to work, I do everything for him most days. His clothes get laundered. His meals get prepared and served piping hot. The house remains semi-spotless. He watches the game, whatever game may be on at any given moment because it is THE MOST IMPORTANT game. At that moment. He naps. He gets "his time". He gets me, his goddess of love. So tell me, what can we possibly do on Father's Day to top every other day of the year?
It's Mother's Day that really only comes once a year. Am I right, ladies?
Yes, I joke, and on a more serious note, I'm happy to celebrate that I have a wonderful father and a husband who is a good husband and father to our son. We are getting together with my parents to have a meal of ribs (man food, natch) and chocolate cake. We gave my dad a lounge chair in which to do just that, and it has a special bald guard to keep that most sensitive of domes from sunburn. Marc is getting new luggage and some cards from Noah and myself, his goddess of love. We will spend the day weekend together and appreciate each other and the family we have.
There was a time thirteen years ago when on this exact day my father had just begun the fight of his life, a battle against Hodgkin's Disease. I can't imagine celebrating this day without him here with me. I wish you all an enjoyable Father's Day. If your father is no longer here to celebrate, consider doing something to honor him, eat his favorite foods, watch his favorite movie and remember him in a way that he would appreciate.
Happy Father's Day!!
