I Didn't Win a Door Prize but I May Have Won Something Better.
We spent Saturday night at my husband's work holiday party. We had a nice time. He has been with the company for almost five years now so we are starting to really know a lot of people.
Every year my favorite part of the party (well, besides the open bar part) was the raffle. Every employee gets one ticket but you can buy extra tickets when you check in. It is a really nice system because the company pays for the prizes but all of the proceeds from the extra tickets that are purchased go to a charity.
Every year we spend $20 to get a 10 extra tickets.
We never win anything.
The prizes are amazing. This year there were iPods and televisions and laptops and gift certificates for places like Tiffany's and Coach.
At my husband's last company we won something almost every year. One time it was a free video rental but one time it was tickets to an NFL game.
Ever since he has been with this company we haven't won a thing.
There is one guy that he works with that wins two or three things every year, but I suspect he spends hundreds of dollars on tickets.
Last night we were feeling like huge losers. Not only didn't any of our tickets get drawn, but nobody at our table won anything.
But after I got home I got to thinking. We didn't win a door prize. We didn't come home with a new computer or a gift card but we came home to our beautiful house where we live with our wonderful, healthy, happy children (who as a bonus were spending the night with their Grandparents, and how lucky am I that I have in-laws who are exited to take the kids for the night?) where we have two computers and two televisions already. We have gainful employment in this economy. We have a wonderful marriage. We like our neighbors. We eat well and our kids go to a great public school. I feel safe. We may not be jetting off to Europe for the holidays and one of our cars doesn't run, but we are not without anything we need.
We didn't win a darn thing in that raffle, but I am okay with that because I think we already won the life lottery.
