I think the Supervisor of the Board of Education in our town needs some time off. Since we’ve moved to Northern NJ, school has been closed several times because of snow in the forecast….yet some of those times, it never actually snowed. My kids have had “rain” days, “flurry days,” and days that turned out to be just plain old days off.
Not that I’m complaining. I relish the time off too. I like to wake up slowly—warming up to morning over at least two cups of coffee and the news, but most days I’m up and out of the house before it’s even light, to take my son to his band practice. Then I rush home to make sure my middle son is up (he’s not a morning person either), and take my 9-year old daughter to school. By the time I pick my kids up at 3 p.m., I’m ready to start unwinding, but like most moms, that’s when my day really seems to begin. There’s a never-ending list of things that need to get done each afternoon, from after-school activities to weekly allergy shots for my middle child. Though we make a concerted effort not to overbook, with three kids, there are times when my kids literally have to be in three different places at the same time.
I’m lucky to have a husband that can pitch in on the craziest days to help, but in spite of our efforts to keep it all running smoothly, there are times when I wish I could just stop the world for a day and have some extra downtime.
